Saw this a couple of weeks ago. Only held my attention sporadically for the first half hour or so, but by the time I'd sat through the dinner table scene, I was totally hooked. Extremely powerful performances from the two leads...
According to UAH (UAH refers to satellite temperature data analysis from the University of Alabama in Huntsville), 2010 and 1998 are basically tied for warmest year, atm.
The bungee looks bad enough- then you realise all those other people up there are trundling about on top of that snow covered roof, and they're not tied on to anything...
As a comment the main thing which comes to mind is the disparity between the guitar music and the sound which plays when you complete a level. I'd probably want to keep it all in the guitar style (a couple of quick closing chords or something)- otherwise, nice job
Four Holidays (I think it's Four Christmases in the States) also had its moments.
(my girlfried always insists on watching these types of movies so I've seen quite a few now, although I don't remember their names and I wouldn't recommend 90% of them)
I did a quick test not long ago experimenting with higher res textures, but Minecraft would crash on me when I tried that. Guess he's fixed that issue.
Practically speaking, (if you need a weapon) I reckon the big ass torch beside the bed is the way to go. It doesn't advertise itself as a weapon to the person you're confronting with it, but you can atleast use it in self defence as a last resort. The person's not going to want to get too close to you as there is no risk to them unless they come within swinging distance, and 9.9 times out of ten they are not going to want to increase the risk to themselves. You're basically guaranteeing your own protection there, and outside of the swinging zone you are no threat to the other guy, therefore he's unlikey to do anything stupid out of fear. You increase the risk by becoming more of a threat- that's usually the way these situations play out, so if you're really interested in reducing risk to yourself and those around you, you need to think your way around that intelligently.
If it looks like he's actually going to pull out a gun, throw the thing at his head, or if he's going to advance on you, shine it in his eyes and then clock him with it
But ultimately I agree with Moose, the best line of action is probably telling him to get the f out.
Cool- I might buy a copy to take on the plane with me when I go on holiday.
In the way of an offering, I might suggest 'The Complete Roderick', by John Sladek. I didn't read much in the way of books this year, but I loved Roderick- it's truly hilarious in many parts, and Roderick himself is such a great character. While in the book he's never really well described physically, which makes for great comedy in itself (people are always confusing him for a normal boy, even though he gets around on tank treads at one point he is called into the school psychologist for insisting that he's a robot!), the other parts of Roderick really leave an impression. Thinking back now to when I read it, I realise that I had imagined a very definite speaking voice for him that's still clear to me now, for eg.
I think the Johnny 5 writers must have taken a lot from the Roderick books. But Johnny 5 got nothing on poor little Roderick.
Mushrooms was the first psychedelic I did. It was my 16th birthday and my next door neighbour (who was also my best friend) and I, drank a mushroom brew in his backyard music studio that was purposely built for our band rehearsals (egg carton walls!).
At some point during our trip his mum came in with a cupcake with a candle in it, and instead of eating it I just slowly picked it apart with my fingers, rubbing the crumbs over and over in my hands. I swore I was tapping in to the atomic structure of the cupcake- I think my friends mum had trouble understanding why I was squishing the cupcake up instead of eating it.
It got to a point in the trip (long after my friends mum left) where I felt that things had gotten really profound. I kept insisting to my friend that we should go outside and tell people all about mushrooms- I had become a 16 year old Jesus. My friend thought it best that we stay inside the studio.
One thing I always notice about my own writing is that I will use two of the same word very close together, over one or two sentences. I always read back my stuff and think that I should use another word instead of the one that I've doubled up on. Not sure if that makes sense, and I'm probably unable to give examples.
(In forums which have an edit button, I tend to hardcore edit my posts until they flow as best they can and I've gotten all the typos and spelling mistakes out. I see it as a kind of forum courtesy I guess. I always feel uncomfortable writing on forums without edit buttons :schwitz
TBH, I didn't play that much of IL2. I got it when it came out, but I didn't have a joystick to use with it, and the mouse/keys did not work well. I could not get seriously into it. Recently I bought Wings of Prey though, as a re-introduction to WWII fighter sims (in anticipation of SOW), and a joystick as well. Even rigged up my own passive freetrack setup, which works extremely well. With a joystick, freetrack, and WOP, you can have a real blast- it's a quality title, although the game does have its limitations. I expect that the amount of detail being put into SOW will blow WOP out of the water. As a simulation, there will be a lot more going on with regards to the various systems, and graphically, the latest videos prove that it's going to be no slouch there either. I think a lot of people are getting nervous imagining how their four year old rigs are going to handle it
Heh- I've been playing a bit of this game. Pretty neat- great concept. Reminds me a lot of the old Ultima Underworld games for some reason.
I've just started out. I have found 2 diamonds, have a bit of gold and iron. Mining is a bit of a chore, but then there's the prospect that you'll hit paydirt somewhere. Looking forward to breaking into some of the underground caverns...
There's a few graphical features turned off for this video, as they were having trouble getting a smooth video capture at the time. Here's another video showing some better plane reflections/textures and lighting...
